Yeah, no kidding. I noticed. I’m quite ashamed of myself. I’ve been tracking your progress with the final chapter almost since you first announced it. I went back and bought all the old Scud issues I had long lost on e-bay, just so I could catch up, and prepare for the new book/s. Then I fell off track right when 21 came out! I came back, and all the pre-orders were sold out. I ran down to my local comic shop – sold out. I looked on e-bay, and it was nowhere to be seen! I couldn’t find it ANYWHERE on the internet. I found #22, so I ordered that immediately. It just came in today. I’m holding it in my hands right now, and man is it awesome to finally actually be holding one of the new issues. But I refuse to read it until I can get my hands on #21, which, luckily, I found a copy of on e-bay today. PHEW. And I’ll definitely be picking up those reprints too. The new cover for #21 looks awesome.

On another note… will you be making an appearence at the San Diego Comic-Con? There’s a good chance that I’ll be going to meet a female friend I met on the net. And that would be a frikkin’ awesome bonus if you were there, and I could actually meet you, and get all my Scud Issues signed. _

I set aside five dollars in a secret compartment in my wallet just so I wouldn’t spend it before Wednesday. This is seriously how sad I am. My girlfriend won’t stop making fun of me. I can’t wait.

I went down to the silver snail (toronto) last week and fuck! No new Scud. I had to endure all the retards and scum of TO to get yer book and there was no book to be had!!! ARRRRRGGGGHHH!!!!

I’m sure it’ll be worth it though. Loving the finale issues. Wish you’d continue doing comics, at least, every-so-often. Yer style, and everything, just flows so nicely. You were meant to do comics. It’d be nice to see you do something other then Scud in comic form.

Your stuff rawks. Out the few artists that I really dig and find to be real inspiring, yer one of the best.

    14 Drowning Rabbit

It’s been said on the blog already that the hardcover is 99.99 and the softcover is 29.99.

As far as it’s been said the hardcover is the same as the softcover only with a hardcover instead. If you check out the previous issue’s comments I think it’s there.

Rob, there is no history on your blog entries I just realized. :( I can’t actually go back to any entry beyond the last like 10, is there any reason for this? I know they are still there, because I’ve used a direct link to get to old entries before, but there is no way browsing that I can find to see an entry before the 10th one.

Also, this is most likely me being stupid like when I asked about the release that was shown in the title of the entry, but I’m just going to try and forget about that one.

that seems like a big jump in price if there is no difference in the two versions.

  17. Gravatar Icon
    17 shane

yeah its quite a jump, but id rather have a nice bound version of my favorite comic. definitely worth the cash for robs time. i hope to buy this from him personally at sdcc this year if it arrives in time.

Rob, any chance on concluding La Cosa Nostroid? It would be great to include it in the omnibus since the series is also part of your “Scud-verse”. Any plans on making a re-issue of Scud #1?

  19. Gravatar Icon
    19 Rob

The Oversized One-Volume edition of Scud will then be released in June 2008.
Rob Schrab has stated that he currently has no plans for further issues of Scud Spin-offs—La Cosa Nostroid, Scud: Tales from the Vending Machine, and The Drywall & Oswald Show. These spin-off books will not be included in the Oversized One-Volume Edition, however Drywall:Unzipped and Black Octopus:Sexy Genius will

Alright, that’s all I needed to hear. I just bought my tickets, and I’m going to Comic-Con. I’m so psyched! I’ve never been to one before, plus I’ll be able to get the Whole Shebang, and wait for hours in line for you to sign it! _

I can’t wait to meet you, man! I might be a wee bit star struck, but I’m an alright guy. Trust me.

I am a happy man today. Life is good.

Does anyone know if there is going to be a limited print run on the hardcover? maybe thats why it is so expensive.

  26. Gravatar Icon
    26 Rob

Yes. It will be very limited. Image is kinda doing me a favor. I just wanted to give the fans an option if they wanted it.

The Old school books are falling apart, this will help let Scud live on someone’s shelf a few decades more.

    27 brandon

Im definatley getting the harcover, i was just wondering if it was numberd or had some special stuff with it, i think the fact that it is very limited make me want it even more!

Hard cover, soft cover, feh. A cover does not Scud make. Books are made to read over and over, so just make sure they use a high quality glue with the binding.
    Have a nice day.

you should see my trades of scud. programmed for damage has pages falling out of it whenever i pick it up. i’d just love a properly bound book that can live on my shelf for a good while.

good question though, im a little antsy on buying one online or waiting for sdcc where they might sell out. o.o

now on my way to pick up #23 and the variants…

Been to three comic book shops here in San Francisco. Retailers said they would be getting the 2nd prints of issues 21 and 22 next wednesday, April 16th. I was only able to get issue 23, but still worth the search. One more issue to go. I agreee with Rob, hardcovers have longer shelf lives (and collectors’ value) than regular trades. Plus Image’s makes high quality hardcover editions in par with that of DC Comics’ or even better. I’m hoping it comes with a slip case and a few extras. Compiling 25+ issues of a comic book would make a really big and heavy print. Probably would cost $99.99 or more. Gotta start getting those extra hours at work…

I’m wondering how much the TPB is going to cost. I got a one volume tpb of Jeff Smiths bone for fourty bucks, and Craig Thompsons Blankets costs thirty, so would you say near the thirty five range?

30 for soft cover and 100 for hard bound.

I could use a little more action and less “Image-y” stuff where the main character yells at god.

  38. Gravatar Icon
    38 Rob

I guess I don’t know what your talking about, where does Scud yell at god? You can’t have over the top action in every story beat otherwise it becomes redundant.

Rob, I loved how you did the text for Jeff in this latest issue. The twist was just epic as well.

    Loved every single page.

Already pre-ordered the hardcover, can’t wait for it to come out/arrive so I can go through it all in one shot yet again.

    Rob,

I’m e-mailing this to you and posting it on your blog because I don’t know if you check both.

I’ll try to keep this brief because I know you’re a busy man.

About six months ago, I graduated from art school where I studied 3D animation. I’m doing freelance work now but I had some free time last week and decided to start a project I’d been meaning to do for a long time: Scud. I don’t usually do fanart because I’d generally rather pursue my own characters and be creative that way but Scud is such an evocative character and I wanted to sort of pay tribute to you and your books.

I finished him yesterday and set up some poses. If you’re interested, you can see them here: http://virb.com/neuropolis/blog/658286

I’d also like to get a turnaround of the character on YouTube if I have the time. Maybe some animation too. If you like what you see here, I can drop by the blog and keep you updated on the future of the character.

I first saw a picture of Scud on the Internet maybe two years ago. It was the iconic “Will Kill for Money” drawing. I was probably a little too young for Scud when the books first hit but the image really captured me and I had to learn more. When I found out the books were out of print, I had to track them down on the Internet (hope that’s okay, I’m still totally buying the omnibus). I read them all in one sitting and the cliffhanger absolutely killed me. When I found out you were continuing the series after all these years and reprinting the old books, I was overjoyed.

Scud’s probably become my favorite comic book ever. I find this character so easy to relate to and your story of drawing the first issue on your kitchen table really inspired me to pursue my own comic work. You’re one of those artists with such a distinct, interesting style that it reminds guys like me that you don’t have to look like Marvel superheroes to get a book published.

    Respect and admiration,

    Pat

PS. The Jeff fight in issue 23 was EPIC.

The splash page in issue 23, the one that was a big mess (to prevent spoilers) reminds me of iron giant.

Awesome issue, but 22’s still my favorite.

Got to the last page of #23, read it, proceeded to jump out of my seat and scream “OH, SNAP!!!” (you know, cause I’m white and nerdy like that) and in the process scared my buddy Joffre out of his seat. So we’re both standing there staring at each other when he asks,”What?” So I told him Rob brought back the horse. I think he left my house shaking his head after that, I couldn’t tell because I was reading the issue over again. I cannot wait for #24. I’m so excited. My nipples are hard.

Will both of the Black Octopus shorts be in the Omnibus, or just the one from Scud #20? Oh, and loving these books so far, can’t wait to see how you wrap this all up! Seeing that Edvis panel was interesting, I thought it was a classy move. I’ve been along for the Scud ride from the day I picked up #5, it keeps getting better, thanks for all the stories and good times.

Speaking of Edvis: Rob, what is he up to these days?

I remember when he first started at Fireman back in the day, and, though I was at first turned off by his art (mostly because I was comparing it to yours), I very quickly grew to love it, especially (well, I suppose ONLY, seeing as I’ve never seen anything else by him*) his work on La Cosa Nostroid. I really think he was (is?) quite good. His style suited the book perfectly; it was humorous and (excuse the word usage) “cartoony” but appropriately dark, and his kick-ass, kinetic action sequences I dare say rivaled your own. He was a good and solid sequential storyteller on the page, and his art clearly grew and evolved with each issue. *I also really loved his ‘Dr. Grave’ story from Big Crap Scare. (Most of these compliments can equally be attributed to your work on Scud, of course, and your first issue of La Cosa still stands as one of my favorites; such a great origin story and issue for Tony…)

Anyway, I always wondered what happened to him, and it was cool to see his panel in this latest issue. (Which was fantastic, by the way; I think the best of these last so far. I won’t go into a point-by-point review/commentary like I did last time (I suppose it tends to be a bit boring), but, suffice to say, great job, and I eagerly await/dread the final issue next month :(

    Thanks again and always, Rob!
